Sally Marie’s Sweetshop Revolution

I loved you and I loved you

If you close your eyes and listen what do you hear

When Morfydd Owen closed her eyes she would have heard nothing but music. Songs, symphonies and piano pieces poured through her.

In her few short years she won more awards than anyone else in the entire history of the Royal Academy of Music. She was beautiful too, garnering 21 marriage proposals by the age of 21. Her friendships included DH Lawrence, Ezra Pound and Ernest Jones, Freud’s closest associate and her future husband.

I loved you and I loved you tells the true story of this gifted composer, who died mysteriously at just 26, after being operated on by Jones on the kitchen table. Her life was emotionally complex, yet her art remains rapturous and transporting.

This production, half-way between dance and a play, explores Morfydd Owen’s music and two major relationships – the man she married, and the one she longed to love.
